If there are no seals on the basement walls, the building material absorbs water depending on its absorption and porosity - water that rises from the ground, but also seepage or rainwater that pushes through the walls from the outside. It migrates in the pores, where it can evaporate, so inward into the basement, upward and outward. Pollutants enter the walls with the water, mostly chloride, sulfate and nitrate compounds. As soon as the water in the base evaporates, the salt bloom remains. Many of these salts attract water, so they have a hygroscopic effect - in addition to capillary transport. The greater water absorption causes greater evaporation, which then leads to greater salt formation - the damage becomes greater and greater.

Depth probes detect the moisture in the wood. Potential meters signal rusting rebars. An infrared camera maps the wet nest.
